As stated by a senior defense spokesperson, the American armed forces carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.

“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”

Background and Prior Actions

This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to increase the military buildup.

Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Defends Tactics Amidst Scrutiny

The government has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.

While the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
