The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
