As Sunbathers Ran From Danger, Viral Image Depicts Lifeguard Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the famous beach as her back yard. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous local residents, heard cracking sounds ringing out around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. Exiting her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the street, talking to a pair who had run up the hill in their swimwear, she noticed someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one running in the direction that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He moved towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many acts of heroism in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and medical teams treating dozens of those hurt.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the patrol base next to the site of the incident transforming into a impromptu treatment center. It was shared that other team members were also seen helping out, for instance going into the ocean to assist people needing help.

In the days after the events, comments of support circulated widely. An online statement conveyed thanks for the individuals who exhibited that “compassion will always overcome darkness”.

The team of rescuers published a message, saying they were “processing what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and support. We are touched by the care for our responders,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it helps those affected.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional lifeguards, stated that the crew acted heroically from the instant the incident commenced through to late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many emotional stories, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” said a local official.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in ensuring our world-famous shores secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that evening should be commended.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the atrocity of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
