Armed conflict at learning center
Learning centers in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a female high school in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The armed faction invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their dormitory, according to a statement.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Community members informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.

In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Safety emergency in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in recent months, with schools suffering the most of the unrest.
