As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves breathing dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Various sections of the capital showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding safe limits.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Current Developments

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous smog that covers the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

Yet earlier this year, the newly elected city government appealed to the highest court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Legal Verdict and Reality

To the disappointment of public health and environmental campaigners, the court complied with the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited periods throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was considerable flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi recorded air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst levels observed during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Effects

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Issue

The dangerously high concentrations of pollution in the city have remained as a serious problem for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near Diwali, the levels of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the worst records ever documented in Beijing, which was formerly regarded as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

The situation in the capital is attributed to a convergence of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air arrives.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple investigations.

The contaminated air results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is projected to be causing ten thousand early mortalities each year in the city.
