Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
