Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow. Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing. Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital. Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video. Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were captured. We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
