Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Continuous Crude Oil Supplies to India in Defiance of American Demands

In a clear signal to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to guarantee “continuous” supplies of oil to India. These remarks came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and affirmed their relationship were “resilient to foreign coercion.”

A Message For the Western Countries

Putin's comments, issued after the annual summit, appeared to be targeted at the United States and its allies, which have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into curtailing its close links with Moscow. The backdrop is in response to previous American measures, notably the introduction of tariffs targeting New Delhi due to its purchase of Moscow's energy exports.

“Russia is a reliable source of energy resources and everything necessary for the development of India’s industry,” Putin remarked. “Moscow stands willing to continue ensuring the consistent delivery of resources for the booming Indian economy.”

Modi, without naming energy specifically, echoed the focus by stating that “a stable energy base has been a robust and crucial cornerstone of the India-Russia alliance.”

Questioning US Interference

In the lead-up to the talks, via a media interview, Putin had challenged US interference on India's energy purchases. Putin stated, “If the US has the right to buy our uranium, how can you deny India have the equivalent access?”

This trip marked his initial trip to India following the start of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations engaged in a clear effort to demonstrate that the friendship between the men was undisturbed.

A Personal Reception

In a unusual move, the Indian PM met Putin upon his arrival. They shared a warm hug as old friends before enjoying a private dinner on Thursday evening.

He later described India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and said it was “based on reciprocal esteem and profound confidence.”

Strengthening Strategic Cooperation

Friday's talks yielded a number of key agreements regarding defence and trade relations. A major outcome was the completion of an joint economic plan extending until 2030, which targets to increase twofold mutual trade to a hundred billion USD per year by the target year.

Furthermore pledged to recalibrate their military partnership. Although Russia continues to be India's largest supplier of weapons, this role has reduced in recent years as India has sought broaden its procurement.

The official release emphasized plans for the collaborative manufacturing of sophisticated military systems, even if explicit reference of systems like the fifth-generation aircraft were left out.

Overall, Russia and India restated that amid the “ongoing challenging, difficult, and uncertain geopolitical situation, their relationship remain durable to outside forces.”
