🔗 Share this article The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites. As I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker. His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara. Surmounting Early Hurdles In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal. Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled. An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and being named best player. Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration. Influences and On-Field Identity Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye. His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips. Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals At Monaco, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said. Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham. Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line. “We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.” Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
