The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
