The Showrunner Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit series reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Audience Reaction

One could easily to get swayed by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?

Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

On the other hand, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why mess with the classics?

“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
